On a summer day in 2008, Gene Wilhoit, director of a national group of state school chiefs (CCSSO), and David Coleman, an emerging evangelist for the common core standards movement, spent hours in Bill Gates’s sleek headquarters near Seattle, trying to persuade him and his wife, Melinda, to turn their idea into reality. They needed funding!
Coleman and Wilhoit told the Gates' that academic standards varied so wildly between states that high school diplomas had lost all meaning, that as many as 40 percent of college freshmen needed remedial classes and that U.S. students were falling behind their foreign competitors.
“Can you do this?” Wilhoit recalled being asked. “Is there any proof that states are serious about this, because they haven’t been in the past?” Wilhoit responded that he and Coleman could make no guarantees but that “we were going to give it the best shot we could.” After the meeting, weeks passed with no word.
Then Wilhoit got a call: Gates was in. What followed was one of the swiftest and most remarkable shifts in education policy in U.S. history. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation didn’t just bankroll the development of what became known as the Common Core State Standards. With more than $200 million, the foundation also built political support across the country, persuading state governments to make systemic and costly changes.

America's Education Watch does not support Charter/Choice/Vouchers
The constant push for Choice in regard to Education and Tax Dollars being used by Private and Parochial schools is a breach of the First Amendment. Parochial schools that take federal dollars no matter if it comes as a result of Choice grants, Title I or anything else will determine that school is no longer Private and must follow all federal Dept. of Education guidelines to include directives such as Common Core.
Our Founders knew tyranny – they had lived it and when they came to this country in the name of religious liberty and freedom they established charter government’s and these charters were to make sure they were never prevented from practicing their religion again. Also put in place were “test acts’ which are the “oaths” a person is expected to take before taking any office in government.
Look up the Baptist minister John Leland who met with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and explained his fear that the protection of religious liberty was not being properly addressed. This was in regard to all religions. Leland struck a deal with the two men that he would represent Virginia at the Constitutional Convention if they would make sure the religious liberties were protected and they did – in the Bill of Rights.
At times Americans question taxation and the right of the government to tax. At this same time some of the founders wanted to pass a bill establishing taxation to pay for Christian teachers. Jefferson and Madison were adamantly opposed to this measure stating they felt “taxation” was a direct assault on the religious liberty they had fought so hard to protect.
Our founders knew that whatever in government they taxed they would have an obligation to regulate it. As with the example of the Christian teachers, if they taxed them they would have become employees of the government and what the government employs it also dictates to.
And here we are - with plenty of taxes and the laws regulating them.
This is the best example I can give you as to the danger behind vouchers being used for religious schools. Once a religious school of any kind takes one penny from the Federal government they are no longer private and will be under regulation of the government.

Public schools innovate, charters stagnate.
Public schools invite students in; charters counsel them out. Charters profit from students; public schools invest in them. Charters are closed due to fraud and corruption - public schools are not. School choice means all schools are under funded. School choice makes it impossible to budget the money. School choice is a distraction not an option to improve learning. Vouchers segregate, not integrate schools. Vouchers for the poor pay for poor quality schools. Vouchers help the rich get richer. Private schools get public money with no strings attached. All represent taxation without representation with un-elected boards. Private/parochial schools taking public tax dollars should have to follow the same rules as public schools. Creating a Federal Department of Education to cabinet level status was done in 1979 under President Carter and was opposed by many in the Republican and Democrat Parties at the time who saw the department as unconstitutional, arguing that the Constitution didn't mention education and deemed it an unnecessary and illegal federal bureaucratic intrusion into local affairs. However many liberals and Democrats saw the department as constitutional under the Commerce Clause, and that the funding role of the Department is constitutional under the Taxing and Spending Clause. The National Education Association supported the bill, while the American Federation of Teachers opposed it.
During hearings in the 1980's Flex, one senator asked U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley exactly what it is they do at the Federal Department of Education. After pondering this question a moment, Secretary Riley replied that, for one thing, they try to determine and disseminate best educational practices. We now know the attitude regarding all this by the Republicans has changed and they are the biggest pushers in creating a format where they and their business friends get rich off of the education of our children while at the same time indoctrinating them into a "dumbed down" society. Educators already know “What Works,” because that’s the title of an 86-page document produced in the 1980's by the Office of Educational Research and Improvement. It includes research findings, descriptions of what works in education, and scholarly references on about 60 subjects. One of the main problems with the Federal Department of Education and all its sub agencies is that they are run by NON-EDUCATORS and that has been the case since the inception of the department. Teachers for the most part unless they are "change-agents" know what is best taught, how to do it and what tools to use. William Tyler Page was declared to be the winner of a contest in writing a National creed. James H. Preston, the mayor of Baltimore, presented an award to Page in the House of Representatives Office Building on April 3, 1918. The Speaker of the House of Representatives and the commissioner of education of the state of New York accepted the Creed for the United States, and the proceedings relating to the award were printed in the Congressional Record of April 13, 1918. It was a time when patriotic sentiments were very much in vogue. The United States had been a participant in World War I only a little over a year at the time the Creed was adopted. The author of the American's Creed, William Tyler Page, was a descendant of John Page, who had come to America in1650 and had settled in Williamsburg, Virginia. Another ancestor, Carter Braxton had signed the Declaration of Independence. Still another ancestor, John Tyler, was the tenth president of the United States. William Tyler Page had come to Washington at the age of thirteen to serve as a Capitol Page. Later he became an employee of the Capitol building and served in that capacity for almost sixty-one years. In 1919 he was elected clerk of the House. Thirteen years later, when the Democrats again became a majority party, they created for Page the office of minority clerk of the House of Representatives. He held this position for the remainder of his life.
